How to Attract Birds to Your Feeder

If your bird feeder in your garden is feeling a bit too quiet, you’re not alone. Many UK bird lovers pop one up and then wait and wait, wondering why no feathered friends have stopped by. However, with a few simple changes, your bird feeder will be in high demand and the results will be so rewarding.

Choose the Right Food

Different birds prefer different snacks, so offering a mix is key. Sunflower hearts, fat balls, nyjer seed, and good-quality seed mixes are all reliable crowd-pleasers. During winter, high-energy foods are especially important as birds need extra fuel to stay warm.

Keep Feeders Clean

Birds are far more likely to visit if your feeder feels safe and hygienic. A quick clean every week or two helps prevent disease and keeps the food fresh and appealing, this can be easily done with warm water or even just a hose down.

Provide Water

A bird bath regularly filled with clean water can be just as enticing as food. Birds need water for both drinking and preening, and clean water is surprisingly hard to find during freezing spells.

Make It Safe

Birds will avoid feeders if they feel exposed. Place your bird feeders near bushes, hedges or trees so they have somewhere to dart into if a predator appears. Just be sure it’s not too close to cover, or cats may use it to ambush them.

Be Patient

It can take days or sometimes weeks for birds to discover a new food source. But once one bird finds it, others usually follow quickly. A bit of patience often pays off.

Happy birdwatching!

Film, photography, flora, fauna, food and foreign climes are what I love most. I’ve been making documentaries around the world and short films more locally for many years and am always up for trying new things. So here I am taking over the reigns of Verdigris and looking forward to getting more beautiful bird baths and feeders into English gardens.
