Feeding Birds In Winter

As winter settles in, our gardens can become lifelines for hungry birds. Natural food sources like insects, berries, and seeds grow scarce, so a well-stocked bird feeder can make a huge difference – both for the birds and for those who enjoy watching them. Feeding garden birds in winter is vital as the temperature drops.

Why Feed Birds in Winter?

During cold spells, small birds like robins, blue tits, and finches burn extra energy just to stay warm. Providing high-energy foods helps them survive frosty nights and short days when foraging time is limited.

What to Feed Them

  • Seeds and grains – Sunflower hearts, nyjer seeds, and mixed seed blends attract a wide variety of species.
  • Fat balls and suet blocks – Excellent sources of energy; just avoid those in plastic mesh.
  • Unsalted peanuts – A protein-rich favourite for tits and nuthatches.
  • Fruit – Apples, pears, or dried fruit can tempt thrushes and blackbirds.
  • Kitchen scraps – Small amounts of cooked rice, grated cheese, or oats can be a welcome treat (avoid salty or mouldy foods).

Don’t Forget Water

Birds need clean, unfrozen water for drinking and bathing. One of our bird baths refreshed daily can be a real lifesaver – you can add a few twigs to help stop it freezing over.

A Safe Space

Keep your bird feeders clean to prevent disease and place them near shelter such as hedges or shrubs to give birds a quick escape from predators. Always keep them well stocked for when our feathered friends come to visit.

The Joy of Winter Birdwatching

Feeding garden birds isn’t just good for them — it’s a simple pleasure that brings colour, life, and a touch of wildness to even the greyest winter day. So, as the temperatures drop and the days grow shorter, it doesn’t take much to support your garden birds. In return, you’ll be rewarded with a variety of feathered friends flitting about.

Film, photography, flora, fauna, food and foreign climes are what I love most. I’ve been making documentaries around the world and short films more locally for many years and am always up for trying new things. So here I am taking over the reigns of Verdigris and looking forward to getting more beautiful bird baths and feeders into English gardens.
